1943 Gibson "Southerner Jumbo". FON 2319 7 - Sold

 Another "Banner" SJ! "Only A Gibson Is good Enough", according to the Headstock Banner that adorns only the "Wartime" (1942-1945) Gibson Guitars and I think they were right, as they made great guitars during this period! This is the first production year for what is actually called the "Southerner Jumbo". This one has a big, beautiful, typical of the era Neck, with no Truss Rod (steel was needed for the war effort) so Gibson installed a Maple "V" shaped insert to run along the Neck, hidden below the Fretboard instead, no need to adjust anything, as they do not move. Other 1943 features are an ivoroid heel cap, a 2 Piece (often 4 piece at that time) Adirondack "Red" Spruce Top, an unbound Fretboard and Tapered Headstock. Some think that the SJ is just a fancy version of the J45, but it seems that the Tops on the SJ are actually a bit thicker and you can hear the difference...This is one sounds a little different to the other one we have, but is still up there with the best sounding acoustic guitars I have ever played, it is in far cleaner condition as the pics show. The Neck is not as Big as the other, although it is still 1 & 3/4" across the Nut, it has a more modern shape!. It is a loud, powerful, well balanced Gibson "Slope" Shouldered Dreadnought, with everything going for it. Come through and give it an audition sometime!
